5 Principles To Market Validate Your Startup Idea

1/ Brute force outreach is unavoidable

The quality of your market research is directly proportional to the number of customer conversations you have.

100 customer conversations is my golden number.

Get a LinkedIn premium account to reach your target customer, it’s invaluable.

Don’t be spammy though, build genuine connections.


2/ Meet in person > video call > phone call

Nothing replaces good old-fashioned in-person meetings to truly get a sense of your customer’s pain points.

Even YC tells founders to get on a plane to go meet customers.


3/ Be open about what you’re building

Being secretive and mysterious about what you’re building is a sign of immaturity.

Being open and talkative attracts people to you.


4/ Ask open-ended questions

Founders tend to ask leading questions that lead to confirmation bias.

Start with a question word. Open-ended questions typically start with question words like “why”, “how”, “what”, “describe”, “tell me about”, or “what do you think about”.

Avoid using leading questions. Leading questions are questions that suggest the answer that the questioner is looking for. For example, instead of asking “Do you like your new job?”, you could ask “What do you think of your new job?”


5/ Use Landing pages to gauge interest at scale

Once you have a sense of customer pain points, potential solutions, and the messaging around it. Set up simple landing pages (fancy design is useless, copy is everything).

Post content to drive traffic to your landing pages. Use A/B testing to test variations of problem+solution.

Pick the winning landing page and iterate further.
